FOCUS

HOW DOES FOCUS DEFINE HOMELESS?

The FOCUS program is designed to serve the families of homeless and near homeless infants and toddlers.  The FOCUS objective is to provide the earliest possible intervention and to prevent child abuse and neglect before it can have long lasting and traumatizing affects.  A child begins to feel the trauma of being homeless when:

* His family is residing in a public shelter of any kind.

* His parents are "doubling-up" moving between homes of relatives or acquaintances for short periods of time with no permanent place to call home.

* His parents are very young, unequipped to provide adequate care from the newborn stage, and have no permanent plan for his care after his is born.

* His parent is forced to remain in a domestic violence situation to avoid homelessness.

* Homelessness is inevitable and imminent due to deteriorating financial circumstances.
